How We Review and Test Products

At Power Backup Lab, our job is to help you choose backup power equipment with confidence. Backup power is a real investment, and the wrong choice can leave your home in the dark during the exact moment you needed it most. This page explains exactly how we research, evaluate, and write every guide and review on this site, so you know what our recommendations are based on.

Our editorial mission

We publish clear, practical, and honest guidance on backup power and energy resilience. That includes portable power stations, solar generators, standby and portable generators, home battery systems, and emergency outage planning. We write for real homeowners making real decisions, not for manufacturers. If a product has weaknesses, we say so.

How we evaluate a product

Our recommendations are built from three independent sources of evidence. We do not rely on any single one of them.

  • Manufacturer specifications. We start with the official technical data: capacity in watt-hours, continuous and surge output, battery chemistry, charge times, cycle life, warranty terms, and expansion options. We read the spec sheets so you do not have to.
  • Independent testing from trusted third parties. We gather published lab and field testing from established, reputable sources that physically measure real-world performance, such as actual usable capacity, recharge speed, and running noise. When independent results disagree with a manufacturer claim, we tell you.
  • Verified owner feedback. We read through large volumes of verified owner reviews and long-term ownership reports to surface the patterns that only show up after months of daily use: reliability, customer support quality, firmware issues, and how a product holds up over time.

How we compare value

For power stations and batteries we calculate price per usable watt-hour, so you can compare products on a level field instead of on sticker price alone. For generators we weigh fuel type, runtime, output, and total cost of ownership, not just the purchase price. Our head to head comparisons use representative, current-generation models in the same size class.

What we do not do

Transparency matters more than sounding impressive. To be completely clear:

  • We do not claim to have physically bench tested every product ourselves. When our analysis is based on specifications and independent testing rather than our own hands-on unit, we frame it that way.
  • We do not accept payment from any brand in exchange for a positive review, a ranking, or a recommendation.
  • We do not let affiliate commissions decide our verdicts. The same product earns the same honest assessment whether or not it has an affiliate link.
  • We do not publish fake urgency, invented test scores, or specifications we cannot verify.

How we keep content current

The backup power market moves quickly, with new models and revised pricing every season. We review and update our core guides regularly to reflect current models, current prices, and new independent testing as it becomes available. If a product is discontinued or superseded, we update the guide to point you to the right current option.
